Peru’s legal services offering is growing, including Legal Marketing, LegalTech, Legal Design and Legal Project Management

In times of crisis, it is common that legal services in the areas of Labour and Tax are activated in the business environment. However, Peru has also seen an increase in recent times in the areas of Litigation and Arbitration, as well as Restructuring, given the current context of social upheaval. Wilfredo Murillo, partner in Peru at Gericó Associates, has participated in a new article in Gestión. Together with another expert in the sector, he analyses the current situation of legal services in the country.

Murillo points out that “the growth in demand for legal services in Peru, which is estimated at 10% by 2023, will be mainly related to arbitration and litigation in a situation where contracts, conditions and deadlines are being breached, especially with local and regional governments and any other entity in charge of public works due to demonstrations”. He also adds that “if you provide a service for the maintenance of a bridge that is taken over by protesters, how do you do it?”

For his part, Luis Vargas, partner of the Corporate and M&A area of the law firm DLA Piper in Peru, focuses on explaining that the situation is worsening because state entities are obliged to demand that companies comply immediately with their obligations without considering reasons of force majeure.

The experts are asked whether there are demands for legal services in bankruptcy and restructuring situations. Vargas replies that his law firm has not noticed any change, as they have not received any requests for advice related to business bankruptcy, but it is still too early to determine whether or not the situation will remain like this for a long time.

New legal services in Peru

Murillo, an expert in this area, adds that the offer of legal services in Peru is expanding, including Legal Marketing, LegalTech, Legal Design and Legal Project Management. The latter even focuses on the fashion, art, culture, health and sports industries.

In his expert opinion, legal marketplaces, or the development of online legal services, are becoming increasingly important in the legal services sector.
